Urban Farm and Entertaining Space on Thornton Creek

This garden began as a well-established blackberry field, on a rolling slope ending in a tributary of Thornton creek. We created three levels of entertaining space, using rock walls and staircases. Among those are a firepit area on the grass, a dining table near the house, a hammock, and a small sitting area by the creek.

We re-graded the steep slope to the creek, and filled it with plants that can tolerate both dry and boggy soils. We installed western juniper raised beds, espaliered fruit trees, and a small round eco-lawn. All beds are edged in river rock, to echo the feel of the natural creek bed.

This garden contains myriad plants to attract beneficial pollinators, as well as many plants to snack on: elderberries, huckleberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, two Asian pear trees, and two apple trees!
